Why don't any of the major cell phone companies publish a cell phone directory?
|
The main reason that none of the major cell phone companies (such as Verizon, T-mobile, Nextel, etc.) will publish
a cell phone directory is because of liability.
There are many reasons that none of the major cell phone companies want to publish a cell phone directory but the
main reason is responsibility and liability.
These cell phone companies do not want to deal with responsibility issues such as being sued over cell phone numbers.
Plus, if Verizon or T-mobile or Nextel were to issue a cell phone directory, what would be in it for them? They
already have you as a subsriber and a cell phone directory would be no value to the company. The only value it would
have would only be to the subscriber.
When I was in college I worked for Cellular One and everyday people were asking me to look up a cell phone number for them.
Of course, I couldn't do that since that was against Cellular One's company policy. Many customers also inquired about
a cell phone directory but all we could tell them was that it was against the companie's policy for a cell phone directory
or for us as employees to give out cell phone numbers.
I strongly believe that there needs to be an organized and managed cell phone directory for the cell phone subscribers. There
are many cell phone directories out on the web but many of them are not managed or you have to pay to use the
directory and you are still not guaranteed to find who you are looking for. There are however some up and coming
cell phone directories on the web that seem to be pretty good and should only get better with time.
